| 'Tortuosa' is a slow growing, spiny tree with contorted, twisted branches. Grows to 50 feet tall and 30 feet wide. Dark green leaves are pinnate to 12 in. long, with up to 23 lance-shaped leaflets. White, fragrant flowers, to 3/4 inches long are held in sparse, pendant racemes, to 8 inches long. Followed by brown, smooth seed pods, 4 inches long.
With judicious pruning while young, this very common and too often neglected tree, can be quite nice. Though a popular street tree, it really should not be used close to power lines where mature, hard wood has to be pruned. |
