|Evergreen shrub or small tree exhibits high spreading growth, 3 to 15 feet tall. Leaves are shiny, medium green above, brownish underneath, round, spiny-toothed, 1 1/4 inch in length. Yellowish-green, unisexual flowers are borne in axillary clusters. In the fall, bears round, red fruit to 1/2 inch across. Best adapted to cold, dry areas with poor soil. Drought tolerant. Native to the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas, Coast Ranges, Southern California mountains, Arizona, Baja California.
