Rhododendron
( C.B. Van Nes Mollis Hybrid Azalea )
| The Mollis deciduous azalea hybrids were developed in Belgium mainly from R. japonicum, but the parentage includes R. molle and possibly R. viscosum, as well as many other species and hybrids. They are tall, upright plants, best in light shade to full sun. The Mollis hybrids are often more resistant to heat than the Knap Hill azaleas. The single flowers bloom in mid to late season in clusters of 7 to 13 blossoms. The deciduous hybrid azalea, like its native counterpart, is known for excellent fall color and unsurpassed spring flowers.
The deciduous azalea is usually less picky about soil conditions, though it too prefers acid soil. Though azaleas have a potentially large list of possible pest and disease problems, they are usually trouble free if planted correctly in proper cultural conditions. |
