|Prinsepia sinensis is a dense, spiny shrub that can be used for hedges and privacy barriers. Grows 6 to 10 feet in height and spread. Bark peels off in thin strips on older stems. Leaves are bright green, one of the first shrubs to leaf out, fall color is insignificant. Small yellow flowers are borne in clusters of 1 to 4 on the previous years wood, appearing in early spring, pretty but not overly showy. The fruit is a red, 1/2 inch drupe, ripening in late summer to early fall, loved by birds. Considered edible. Quite adaptable, likes fertile well drained soil and sun, resistant to pests. Responds well to pruning. Native to China.
