| This rather small rainforest palm has an understory growth pattern. Coarse, split and ragged fronds on top and sharp spines protrude from the trunk. Young plants need sheltering from direct sun but get hardier with age. Upon maturity, they can tolerate full sun to partial shade. The plants grow best in moist, well-drained soil and bear orange-red to red fruit. Where not hardy, grow in containers as foliage specimens.
