| This variegated cultivar is a dense, rounded evergreen that forms an inpenetrable thicket, growing 8 to 10 feet in height, not quite as wide. Older specimens may reach 15 feet tall. The leaves are green with yellow margins. On young plants the leaves are simple and elliptic, leaves on older plants tend to be ovate to oval. The tiny white flowers are extremely fragrant, hidden amongst the leaves, blooming between early and late fall. The fruits are seldom borne under cultivation, not showy. They prefer moist and well drained, acidic soil but are fairly adaptable. They don't seem to suffer from many pests. Great plant for borders, screens and hedges, as it is quite spiny it can be a useful barrier plant. Native to Japan, introduced 1856. |
