| Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is a low growing, mat forming evergreen shrub, 6-12" tall, 2-4' wide. Foliage consists of small glossy leaves, can cover 15' diameter area, but is not invasive. Dark green foliage turns a bronzy red in fall and winter. Small, dainty, bell shaped flowers appear in mid spring on nodding racemes. The fruit is a bright red, highly decorative, borne in late summer, persisting into fall.
Hard to transplant, container grown mat is the best bet. Found on diverse soils, but does best on poor, infertile sandy acidic soil, salt tolerant, found on rocky coastlines. Do not fertilize, pruning is not necessary. A beautiful, low maintenance groundcover, once established.
It can be subject to rust, gall, and black mildew. Various cultivars are available. Native circumboreally in northern hemisphere, in the U.S. it reaches as far south as northern California, Virginia. |
