| Berberis x mentorensis is a hybrid between B.julianae and B.thunbergii. It is a medium to large evergreen barberry, 5-7' tall, 10-12' wide. Growth habit is stiffly upright, with many stems, becomes bushy and rounded with age. Foliage is leathery, dark green in summer, orange-yellow or red fall color.
It can be semi-evergreen to deciduous in colder climates. Attractive yellow flower appear in mid spring, not particularly showy. Prefers well drained soil, otherwise quite adaptable, not usually bothered by pests, although Verticillium can be a problem. Good plant for use as a barrier hedge because of the thorns, also excellent as a border or mass planting shrub. |
