| This mat forming, evergreen shrub has thin shoots and elliptic, oblong, dark green leaves to 3/4 inch across. Leaves turn bronze in winter. In summer, plant bears pendant, bell-shaped, pink flowers. Blooming is followed by edible, round, bright red berries.
V. vitis-idaea prefers a cooler climate and moist to wet soil. Vitis-idaea (cowberry) may grow to 10 feet tall. The leaves are a lustrous dark green above and paler on the underside; turns to metallic mahogany in winter. The flowers are white and pinkish May through June. The variety is lower growing and hardier than the species. |
