| S. vanhouttii blooms in orange-red flowers to 1-1/2 inch long in late summer to autumn. The loose terminal spikes with burgundy calyces on this species are short-lived. This is a herbaceous perennial with diamond shaped green leaves 3 inches long. Salvia can be planted in a sunny border, in a meadow or used for bedding and container planting. Best in fertile, humus, moist but well-drained soil. |
