|Three different clones are listed under this name. All have pink fragrant flowers, slightly larger than typical. Deciduous shrubs, reaching 5-15 feet tall with rough brown or silvery gray bark. Twigs are greeny-yellow. Terminal buds are covered with silvery hairs. Leaves are smooth and dark green with paler green undersides. The white flowers are fragrant tinged with pink. Blooms in March to April, fruits August to September. Seed grown plants may flower between 1-2 years old.
Adaptable to many conditions, and quite cold hardy and wind tolerant. Blooms best in a sunny location. One of the most popular magnolias in cultivation. Because of its early flowering it can be damaged by frost. Native to sunny slopes in damp areas of central Honshu, Japan.
