C lawsoniana is a large evergreen tree, reaching 40-60' tall under cultivation, and 180' tall in the wild. The trunk is large and buttressed at the base, branches are ascending with drooping flattened tips. Old bark has thick rounded ridges, silvery to reddish brown, foliage is deep green. Numerous small cones, only 1/3" wide, blue-green when young, reddish brown at maturity. Prefers a sheltered location, moist well drained soil. It performs best in areas with cool, moist climates.
A root rot caused by Phytophthora lateralis can devastate the tree, but otherwise it is not troubled by disease. Native from southwestern Oregon, to northern California. It is an elegant specimen tree, with many cultivars available.
