| Stewartia monadelpha is a large shrub to small tree with a rounded shrubby habit. Foliage is dark green with excellent maroon fall color. Bark is cinnamon-brown and smooth in maturity, scaly rich brown in younger specimens. It is heat tolerant, so a good choice for southern US gardeners. Flowers are 1 to 1 1/2 inches wide, white with yellow stamens, blooming over a month long period, starting in early summer. Fruit is a small, woody capsule covered with fuzz. Prefers partial shade. Native to Japan. |
