|C. ovata is a large deciduous hickory, reaching 60-80' tall, can reach 100-120' tall. Develops a straight trunk and oblong crown. Foliage is deep yellow-green in the summer, changing to rich golden brown in autumn. The seed is edible and sweet, smoked hickory nuts provide hickory flavor to barbeques. Natural habitat is lower slopes with well drained alluvial soils, and upper drier slopes, adaptable. Bark develops a characteristic shaggy plated look. Native from Quebec to Minnesota, south to Georgia and Texas.
