Rhododendron hybrida
( Girard's Scarlet Girard Azalea )
| A cold hardy (down to -5 degrees Fahrenheit), evergreen azalea of medium to large size grown for it's large flowers.(Flowers grow to 3 inches across) Girard's Scarlet has a low, compact form, to 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide, with waxy, dark green foliage and scarlet flowers. This particular azalea hybrid was bred by Girard Nursery's in Geneva, Ohio.
Flowering time is from early to late spring depending on cultivar and growing climate. Plant as you would any of the other azaleas: high and in well-drained, acid soil, rich with organic matter.
Though azaleas have a potentially large list of possible pest and disease problems, they are usually trouble free if planted correctly in proper cultural conditions. |
