Calocedrus decurrens
( California Incense Cedar )
| Calocedrus decurrens is a large evergreen conifer, generally reaching 30 to 50 feet tall, 10 feet wide under cultivation. The growth habit is narrow and columnar in youth, remaining uniform and formal in outline at maturity. Bark on older trunks is yellow-brown to cinnamon red, deeply furrowed and fibrous. Foliage is flattened and needle-like, glossy and dark green. Cones are 3/4 inches long, reddish brown when ripe. Prefers moist, well drained and fertile soil. Does not tolerate pollution or wind exposure. Can be subject to a heart rot disease, rust, and a leafy mistletoe.
It is an excellent formal specimen tree for large areas. Native from Oregon to Nevada, south to California. |
