| The Belgian Indian azaleas are the result of crosses between several different species, including R. simsii, R. mucronatum, and R. indicum. They were originally bred as greenhouse forcing plants.
Two similar sports bear the same name: 'Improved Redwing' (rose) and 'Improved Redwing' (pink). Small, bushy, evergreen azalea with lush, glossy, dark green leaves, 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 inches long. Flowers are borne profusely in large, showy trusses from late winter to early spring. Excellent choice for growing indoors in containers. Can be grown outdoors where winter temperatures do not fall below 20 degrees F.
Plant as you would any of the other azaleas: high and in well-drained, acid soil, rich with organic matter. Though azaleas have a potentially large list of possible pest and disease problems, they are usually trouble free if planted correctly in proper cultural conditions. |
