Platanus occidentalis
( Buttonball )
| Platanus occidentalis is one of the tallest eastern native deciduous tees, generally growing to 80 feet tall. It has a substantial trunk and a spreading crown of bent branches, very striking in appearance. Brownish-gray bark peels off in irregular patches, exposing the inner white bark, in winter the effect is dramatic. Leaves are alternate, simple, large, with 5-lobes and coarsely toothed. Foliage is medium to dark green, fall color is unremarkable. Flowers appear in mid spring and are not showy. It is not quite as tolerant as Platanus x acerifolia, and prefers deep, moist rich soils. Various pests attack this tree, including but not limited to: sycamore plant bug, sycamore tussock moth, bagworms, and borers. Native from Maine to Ontario, south to Florida, and Texas. |
| Important Info : Large tree, which can reach 150 feet tall. |
