| Scabiosa stellata is a branching, upright, hairy, wiry-stalked annual with medium green, ovate to lance-shaped, pinnatifid leaves, to 7 inches long. Summer borne flowers of Drum Stick are solitary, rounded, light blue, up to 1 1/4 inch wide, and are followed by clusters of cup-shaped, maroon and green, enlarged bracts which form showy, bronzy seed heads. These 3 inch wide, attractive seed heads make wonderful dried arrangements. Scabiosa thrives in soil that is sunny, neutral to alkaline, well-drained, and on the dry side. It does not like excessive winter moisture and should be divided every 3 years or it will die out or become less vigorous. Native to southern Europe. |
