| Styrax japonicus is a small tree, with a low branching, rounded crown, very horizontal aspect. Foliage of Sohuksan is leathery, very deep green in summer, yellow to red in fall, not dramatic. Flowers are white, 3/4 inch wide, bell-shaped with a mild fragrance, 3 to 6 flowers on a stalk. Extremely beautiful. The fruit is a grayish drupe, somewhat ornamental, late summer, drops by late fall. Prefers moist, well drained, acidic soil. Gorgeous specimen and border tree, though not well known. Generally pest free, some plants may be bothered by borers. Native to China, Japan. Some pink flowered varieties are available. |
