|Acer carpinifolium is an atypical maple; leaves are ovate-oblong, not "maple-leaf" shaped at all, growth habit is vase shaped. Height is 20 to 25 feet tall. Bark is gray and smooth, greenish flowers appear in late spring on short racemes. Summer foliage is dark green, fall color is rich gold to brown. Leaves resemble Hornbeam tree foliage. Prefers moist, well drained soil, part shade. Native to Japan.
