Vitis vinifera
( Cabernet Franc Grape )
| The grape is a deciduous vine that is used for fruit, wine and shade. A single grapevine produces enough new growth every year to roof an arbor, arch a walkway, or shade over a terrace or deck. To produce quality grapes, choose a variety that fits your climate, prune it regularly, and train it carefully. Grapevines also require full sun, medium water, and good drainage. Well cared for, they can remain productive for 50 years or longer. The vines should only be pruned in the winter. Black rot is the most destructive fungus disease of grapes. Downy mildew and powdery mildew can also be a problem as well as the following insect pests: grape berry moth, grape flea beetle, grapevine beetle, sphinx caterpillar, grape root worm and Japanese beetle. This variety produces fruit similar to Cabernet Sauvignon. It is very cold hardy and its fruit ripens earlier. |
