|Acer saccharum is a large maple best known as the source of maple syrup. 'Bonfire' is said to be the quickest growing cultivar, reaching 50 feet tall and spreading 40 feet. It has also shown good heat and leaf hopper resistance. Mature bark is deeply furrowed, gray brown. Foliage is medium green in summer, brilliant yellow, orange and some red color are displayed in fall. Greenish-yellow flowers are borne on 1- to 3-inch clusters, in mid spring. Prefers moist, well drained fertile soil, tolerates shade, does not tolerate pollution or salt. Leaf scorch can be serious in drought conditions, and Verticillium wilt can be serious. It is an excellent tree for large park areas, with unparalleled fall color and overall attractive appearance.
