Rhododendron hybrida
( Hill's Single Red North Tisbury Azalea )
| Resembling its ancestor, Rhododendron nakaharai , this hardy, evergreen azalea is a very late bloomer, continuing well into midsummer. Habit is compact, spreading, and low, making it a very suitable ground cover or hanging basket. Flowers of Hill's Single Red are salmon-red and showy.
Plant as you would any azalea: high and in well-drained, acid soil, rich in organic matter. Filtered light is best. North Tisbury hybrids have been produced by Mrs. Polly Hill on Martha's Vineyard since 1957. Though azaleas have a potentially large list of possible pest and disease problems, they are usually trouble free if planted correctly in proper cultural conditions. |
