| Cross between M.liliiflora and M.kobus var. stellata. A compact growth habit and red-purple flowers, inside and out, 5 inches wide. Later flowering than typical, producing a good spring display. Bloom sporadically in the summer. An erect deciduous shrub reaching 7-15 feet tall. Twigs are brown to gray and smooth. Leaves are dark green, both sides smooth, occasionally fuzzy when young. Slighty fragrant flowers are vase-shaped, purple with white interiors. Stamens are reddish purple. It is prized for its purple flowers, shrubby habit, and blooms appearing before the leaves. Suited to home landscapes. Blooms April to May, fruits July to August. |
