| Evergreen tree or large shrub, to 40 feet tall. The bark dark brown and rough textured, with grayish twigs. Leaves are dark green and leathery above, ligher on undersides. Creamy white flowers are 7 inches across, fragrant, with yellow stamens. Flowers open at night, in mid summer and last only a few hours. More tolerant of wind than many magnolias, and quite hardy. Easily propagated by layering, and blooms from seed in 9-10 years.
Native to forests in Yunnan and Sichauan, China, at 4500-7500 feet altitude. |
