| Large, deciduous tree to 65 feet tall, with brownish gray bark, yellowish twigs. Terminal buds have a coating of yellowish hairs. Leaves are 4-8 inches long, glossy green above, grayish green and fuzzy below. Flowers are 8-10 inches across and fragrant, blooming in light pink to purplish pink. Long stamens have a rose color. It has an upright habit, somewhat spindly, blooming at 25 years age. Apparently it has alternating heavy and light bloom years. Likes moist, well drained soil, and filtered light. Flowers in March to April, fruiting in August to September. Native to woodland areas of China, aat 5200-8500 feet elevation. Known locally as 'Yin-chin-hwa' it is used in Sichuan medicinally. |
