| Acer saccharum is a large maple best known as the source of maple syrup. 'Sweet Shadow' is a slow growing cultivar with a rounded form. Mature bark is deeply furrowed, gray-brown. Foliage is dark green in summer, turning orange in fall. Greenish-yellow flowers are borne on 1- to 3-inch clusters, in mid spring. Prefers moist, well drained fertile soil, tolerates shade, does not tolerate pollution or salt. Leaf scorch can be serious in drought conditions, and Verticillium wilt can be serious. It is an excellent tree for large park areas, with unparalleled fall color and overall attractive appearance. |
