Cucumis melo
( Blenheim Orange Melon )
| 'Blenheim Orange' is an heirloom forcing melon generally grown in greenhouses. It has a thick rind and red-orange flesh which is very fragrant. Generally there are mature fruits on the vine 100 days after planting, making it good for relatively short summer climates. The melons usually weigh 2 pounds. Thrives under arid, well-watered conditions. Melons can be a challenge to grow, so dependant are they on good soil and hot weather. They can be difficult to grow outside the region in which they were developed. Baking hot, sandy soil, is generally a good bet for improving your crop.
It is useful to have a cold frame to get the plants going early. Starting them in pots can also be useful, as the roots will be less disturbed by transplanting. Vine productivity can be improved by pruning. When the vines are 2.5 feet long, remove the end buds, which will encourage lateral growth. Keeping the vines short will preserve the plant's resources for the fruit. |
