( Pineapple Sage )
| From winter to spring the species elegans, flowers in loose panicles of bright scarlet flowers 1 inch long at the end of the stem. This perennial or subshrub has egg-shaped, triangular leaves 4 inches long with a pineapple scent. The cultivar, 'Scarlet Pineapple' syn. S. rutilans (Pineapple Sage), has leaves when crushed, smell like pineapple and it's stems are more densely hairy than the species. Also it produces larger flowers. Salvia can be planted in a sunny border, in a meadow or used for bedding and container planting. They thrive best in light moderately fertile, humus moist but well-drained soil in full sun to light shade. |
