| Ilex cassine is seldom seen in the garden, but is significant because of all the wonderful hybrids between it and Ilex opaca, the American holly. The Dahoon holly is a small evergreen tree that grows to about 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide (larger in the wild). It thrives in zones 7 to 9 and has either yellow or red berries. In the wild, you will find this plant growing in moist woods. 'Wild Robert' is a female cultivar. Leaves are a dark olive green color, 1 3/16 to 2 inches long. Berries are vivid red, 3/16 to 7/32 inch in diameter. Small, pyramidal, upright habit. |
