Large, deciduous, shrubby tree to 50 feet tall, with brownish gray bark, yellowish twigs. Terminal buds have a coating of yellowish hairs. Leaves are 6-8 inches long, glossy green above, grayish green and fuzzy below. Flowers are 8-10 inches across and fragrant, blooming in light pink to purplish pink. Long stamens have a rose color. Blooms at 13 years of age. Apparently it has alternating heavy and light bloom years. Likes moist, well drained soil, and filtered light, and protection from wind. Flowers in March to April, fruiting in August to September. Native to woodland areas of China, at 5200-8500 feet elevation. |
