| Hybrid between M. denudata and M. sargentiana var. robusta. Deciduous tree or large shrub reaching 50-65 feet tall. Bark is gray brown and rough textured with dark brown twigs. Terminal buds have a coating of yellowish hairs. Leaves are elliptic, 3-6 inches long, and smooth and dark green above, light green with fine hairs below. Vase-shaped flowers are fragrant, with pink or purple tinges at the base. Stamens are rosy purple. Flowers are precocious, appearing before the leaves in March or April. One of the most widely cultivated of the magnolias. Flowers are destroyed by frost so it needs a protected area. It prefers moist soil, and light shade but it is adaptable. Native to woods at 4000 feet elevation in eastern provinces of China. It is a symbol of purity, and has been planted at Buddhist temples since 600-900 A.D. The bark is used as a medicine, and the flowers are eaten. |
