|'New London Particular', also known as 'Wood's Frame' is one of the earliest radishes available, and an heirloom variety to boot. Radishes are ready for harvest 20 days after sowing. The roots are pencil-thick and 3 inches long. Harvest them quickly, because they go from perfection to bolting within a matter of days. Skin is bright red, fading to pink at the tip, and flesh is crisp. Depending on the variety you want to grow, your radishes will have different sowing times. Small globe types should come first. Plant diakon types after the hottest days of summer or they will bolt.
Radishes like light, sandy soil which is cultivated deep, depending on the length of the variety you are growing. Sow short rows 6 inches apart, and water the seed bed if weather is dry to encourage rapid germination. Diakon types should be sown 8-10 inches apart. Globe types should be mature within a month, and should be eaten then before they become dry or pithy. If they bolt, you can use the seedpods in stirfry, and they are spicy like the root. Diakon and winter radishes can take as long as 3 months to reach harvesting size.
