| Variegata has leaves margined with creamy white and tinged pink in winter. Ternstroemia gymnantherea is a densely branched evergreen shrub with an upright habit. New foliage is bronzy-red, summer color is very dark green, winter may produce a rich reddish bronze hue. Branches have the leaves clustered at their ends, giving it a tufted look. Flowers are yellowish white, small, 1 to 3 together, late spring blooming. A 1/2 to 1 inch green to red berry ripens in early fall. Intolerant of wet soils with poor drainage, needs shade. Can be used as a screen or hedge, or as an accent plant. Native to Japan, Korea, China, India and Borneo. |
