| C. mollissima is a large deciduous tree, 40-60 feet tall and wide. Habit is rounded in youth, broad and low branched in maturity. Bark displays strong ridges and furrows. New foliage is reddish, summer leaves are dark green, fall color is handsome yellow and bronze. Creamy flowers with a somewhat rank fragrance are borne on a 4-5 inch panicle in early summer. The fruit is an edible nut eaten by both man and animals. Quite a durable, adaptable tree which can be used as a replacement for American Chesnut. Native to China and Korea. |
