| Tsuga caroliniana is a medium large evergreen hemlock. Growth habit is spirelike with a tapering trunk, and pendulous upper branches forming a pyramidal crown. Bark is reddish brown with fissures.The foliage is lustrous green, flowers are inconspicuous. Cones are small, 1 to 1/2 inches long, brown. Requires moist well drained soil, partial shade, and sheltered location. One of the better hemlocks for in-city plantings, some cultivars are available, though not widely used.
