|'Purple', also known as 'Violet' is an heirloom variety from Afghanistan. The root is slender and spindle-shaped, growing about 9 inches long and about 1 inch in diameter. The skin is deep-purple in color, as is the flesh. The core is bright yellow, very pretty when sliced. This particular cultivar thrives in wet, heavy soil. Generally bolts the first year, flowering in October, and the flowers are variegated and beautiful. Loose, well-drained soil, free from clods and stones are a must for carrots. If your soil is less than ideal, plant only short rooted varieties.
