| 'Violet', also known as 'Purple' is an heirloom variety from Afghanistan. The root is slender and spindle-shaped, growing about 9 inches long and about 1 inch in diameter. The skin is deep-purple in color, as is the flesh. The core is bright yellow, very pretty when sliced. This particular cultivar thrives in wet, heavy soil. Generally bolts the first year, flowering in October, and the flowers are variegated and beautiful. A hardy biennial grown as an annual, carrot tops are a rosette of fern-like foliage growing from a swollen tap root. A cool weather crop that is easily grown with few disease or pest problem, they should be planted in early spring with successive crops being planted every 2 to 3 weeks until early summer for a continuous crop. |
