| Erica cinerea is a low growing shrub with needle-like leaves, a member of the heath family, mounding to 1 foot tall. Foliage is dainty and dark green, urn-shaped flowers are purple, pink, or white, blooming in the summer. Can be used as an effective groundcover, it forms a nice low mat. Heaths require good drainage, preferably sandy soil, and most like acidic soil. They rarely require fertilizing, good compost is usually sufficient. Cut back after flowering. Various cultivars are available. 'Windlebrook' bears golden yellow leaves that turn orange-red in the winter months. |
