How to propogate??

Hi,
Im a novice to gardening...I want to be able to grow trees from cuttings..ie elm,maple,birch etc. Im such a novice im not sure what to do! Ive heard that you cut a piece of branch off 5-6" with a diagonal cut and put it in a couple of inches of soil. Is this correct? ANY advice would be fantastic!
