HELP!!!!

This is my first attempt at growing "Giants". Live in Western KY, have had plants in ground approx 1 month. Everything great until this morning. Best plant (of course) had a split in stem approx. 2" from ground, approx 1" long. Is the party over or can something be done to save this vine? Have used Sevin religiously, could it be wind damage??Thanks for any help!
