This spring some squash-like plants (3 or 4) came up uninvited among my perrennials (right next to my compost pile...) after a little consideration I remembered that my girlfriend gave me a halloween pumkin last fall, that eventually ended up in compost. When the many buds at the end of their stalks fell off after opening, I did a little internet research, and learned that this is what male buds do. However, I don't have ANY female buds, no buds with little baby pumkins underneath. What gives? The plants look healthy, are growing, the buds are beautiful and large, though the plants are not getting any special care. Just the occasional watering and compost that my perrenials get...
