It all depends on how big and how many pumpkins you want. A bunch of small ones, or a few bigger ones. The important thing is that you only begin thinning after the fruit is set. If you're growing a typical "jack-o-lantern", wait till it's about the size of a softball. If it's a giant you're growing, maybe a volleyball. Try not to trim the vines if at all possible. The more leaves and vines the better for energy absorption.

: I'm new at growing pumpkins and we planted 2 plants and they are loaded with buds, but once they start producing fruit should we thin the existing buds so the pumpkins will grow bigger or should we let the plants produce as many pumpkins as it wishes???
