Pumpkins fall off vine!!!

Help! My father is also growing pumpkins and we have noticed that just after fruit set, the pumkin will fall off of the vine! Very strange. We are new growers and I am not sure what is going on. We did experiment with early pruning of the vines to try and control the sprawling vines but have stopped prunning to see if this was the cause of the fruit dropping off.
Any help would be wonderful.
