When's it done growing?

: My only set fruit started early.  It's still growing, but definitely slowing down.  Is there a point where it'll stop growing, or is it more a matter of when the contest is held?  How do I know when it's done?  Is there any danger to leaving it on the vine too long, asuming there are still some living leaves?
