the stump, or trunk of my plant has little cracks???

:   the stump of my plant has little cracks, and becomes white in appearance. this happens every year, then they become open wounds that seep yellow, green mush. i have heard this is bachterial wilt, but my plant stays heathy till onset of fruit, then the roting starts. i fertalize once a week, and if no rain drench once a week. so no excess water or fertalizer. where am i going wrong???? Please help while there is still time. I live in indiana, zone 7
