I've also had the same problem. I've only been growing for 3 years, but I used some 'floral stem wrap tape' I wrapped the trunk loose but made sure the tape sealed and then covered with soil and kept an eye out for insects. This year I'm going to try some fungicide, mix it into a paste, I read the big boys use it for vine repair, and it doesn't wash off. I live in Southern WI, looks like close to the same zone. Good Luck !
