When do I switch to a High Potassium Fertilizer

In the book Giant Pumpkin Growing III, Don says to switch to a high potassium fertilizer, (x-x-X) on August 20. This seems kind of late, I'm currently using a balanced fertilizer, 4.4.4, and Fish Emulsion, and Seaweed. The pumpkin, (Scherber 720) is 80" at 26 days.
