Something's eating my pumpkins and it's not me!

Hello -
I have 1 pumpkin about the size of a football that has now become a snack for some small furry creature. There are 1/2" bites out of the pumpkin (about 12 of them). This one is a goner, but I have another just coming in. How can I protect it from the furry munchers?
